The tide of news in PR software is slowing [PR Tech Sum 59]

Meltwater adds X / Twitter “resyndication rights”; Muck Rack pitches a “hit score” in latest release; mentions and recommended reading

When I first started compiling these monthly summaries – back in April of 2019 – it was because no one was covering the PR software community. Coverage was scant and inconsistent.

I wanted to change that, or at least challenge that thinking. Technology is embedded in every part of our lives and communications and PR shouldn’t be excluded. So, I began writing these summaries, doing briefings with vendors and doing some hands-on product reviews.

When ChatGPT came on the scene – two years ago – I thought for sure we were in for a wild ride. It was initially, but oddly, things have slowed considerably. The handful of announcements that are coming tend to be heavy on adverbs and adjectives and light on substance.

I find myself skipping some months hoping to get something more material for the next month. Other months I find myself including things that aren’t particularly interesting because I feel like I should have more to offer.

Neither of those are good options, so I’m going to make a change for next year. I’m not sure what yet, but I’m considering a few options:

  • Ending all coverage of PR technology;
  • Limiting summaries and putting more emphasis on briefings and reviews; or
  • Limited coverage to select announcements on a case-by-case basis.

I’m leaning towards that last option because then I’d only write about the things I think sound interesting, rather than because I feel obligated to include an announcement merely because I do this summary.  If you’ve got a perspective, I’d be interested in hearing from you. And now onward with the PR Tech Sum.

1. Meltwater adds X / Twitter “resyndication rights”

Meltwater said it expanded its partnership agreement with X, formerly known, as Twitter. Under the expansion, Meltwater has “secured the rights to resyndicate X content to approved customers.”

“By gaining resyndication rights, Meltwater can now offer its customers the ability to access and utilize X’s full-text content through its API. This development is particularly beneficial for customers who require more advanced data analysis and insights,” according to the press release.

In a statement, X CEO Linda Yaccarino said, “This expansion will bring our content to more users around the world, so they can see what we already know: there is simply no substitute for X.”

2. Muck Rack pitches a “hit score” in latest release

Muck Rack published a roundup-style release with features aimed at PR measurement. Among the list was a “PR Hit Score.”

According to the announcement, “PR Hit Score is a proprietary metric that helps users easily understand which mentions are most important to their coverage based on a set of customizable values, including the outlet’s importance, journalist influence and article engagement and influence, among others.”

The company isn’t just pitching it as a measurement tool, but also a tool for decision support. The PR Hit Score “can be used to help customers identify the press hits worth responding to and which to highlight to stakeholders, and to report on the overall quality of their coverage.”

3. Mentions

  • Meltwater released a series of updates including AI. For example, it’s added an AI assistant that customers can query for answers in the platform. It also added, AI to it’s search features, which “goes beyond searching by name or keywords, and analyzes the meaning and messaging of content to recommend the most relevant and best-fit contacts for a story.”
  • Medianet an Australian based company that makes PR software announced a new media monitoring tool. Monitoring puts the company in the all-in-one category offering a media database, distribution and monitoring.

4. Reading list

  • 69% of those surveyed by PR Newswire “expect to send the same number of press releases over the next 12 months.”
